Ezekiel’s Chariot of Fire – UFO or Vision from God?

What did the prophet Ezekiel see in the skies over Babylon more than 2,500 years ago?
A divine vision… or a flying machine beyond his understanding?

This is one of the weirdest stories in the entire Bible — and some believe it could be the Bible’s first-ever UFO sighting.

Setting the Scene

The year is around 593 B.C. Ezekiel, a Jewish priest and prophet, is living in exile in Babylon. He was taken from his homeland in Jerusalem during the first wave of captivity by King Nebuchadnezzar.

One day, while sitting by the Kebar River, Ezekiel receives a vision.
And it’s not your average dream.

The Vision

Ezekiel sees something extraordinary:

“I looked, and I saw a windstorm coming out of the north—an immense cloud with flashing lightning and surrounded by brilliant light.”
(Ezekiel 1:4)

Inside this fiery cloud are four strange creatures. Each has four faces — a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle.
They shine like bronze, their legs are straight, and their feet are like calves’ hooves.

Beside each creature is a “wheel within a wheel” — strange flying structures that can move in any direction without turning.

Above the creatures is a platform, and on that platform sits a glowing figure like a man, surrounded by fire and brilliant light.

Ezekiel falls to the ground in awe.

Traditional Interpretation

Most Bible scholars see this vision as symbolic:

  • The four creatures represent God’s presence and power.
  • The wheels show that God can move anywhere — He’s not limited to the temple in Jerusalem.
  • The glowing figure represents the glory of the Lord.

But not everyone agrees…

The Ancient Alien Theory

Some suggest that Ezekiel wasn’t witnessing a vision at all — but rather a real-life encounter with something not of this world.

Ancient astronaut theorists point to the details:

  • Metallic bodies
  • Wheels that move without turning
  • A bright platform in the sky
  • A glowing humanoid figure

It all sounds… suspiciously like a modern UFO report.

In the 1970s, NASA engineer Josef Blumrich wrote a book titled The Spaceships of Ezekiel. He believed Ezekiel saw an actual spacecraft — and even designed a model based on the biblical description.

Was it a vision from God?

Before jumping to conclusions, it’s important to remember the world Ezekiel lived in.

He was in ancient Mesopotamia — a culture filled with cosmic imagery, fiery sky gods, and winged beings.
As a trained priest, Ezekiel would have understood visions, symbols, and prophetic imagery deeply.

This vision may not have been meant to be taken literally at all. Instead, it communicated a powerful message:

God is not stuck in one place. He is mobile, powerful, and present — even in exile.
